Sony Vaio S Graphics

I recently purchased a new Sony laptop and cannot get gdm to boot.  When trying to start gdm, I get 6 errors from GdmDisplay lasting 0.06 seconds, and then "gdm-binary[1138]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors"

After checking /var/log/xorg.0.log,  the errors are:

No devices detected
No screens found

The laptop has the hybrid graphics card, nvidia 640m LE / intel 4000.  With that said, I cannot get the nvidia card to identify on lspci, it just lists as "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0fd3 (rev 3)"

So the ultimate question; how can I get gdm to start up?

Additionally, if I delete xorg.conf, gdm starts, but the screen is shifted and wraps...  The left edge of the screen is on the right side about 1/3 the way over.

For hybrid Optimus you need to check out bumlebee on the wiki (and forums) first: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

Re: Sony Vaio S Graphics

Strike0, thanks, that got me in the right direction.

So, it works, but it doesn't.  After reading the bumblebee guide, I needed to load the i915 module to fix the intel side of this hybrid card.  That fixed the screen offset.  The problem I have now is; the optirun command causes the laptop to power off.  No errors in the logs, no errors in terminal, it just pauses for 5 seconds, then powers down.

Is anyone else having this problem.  And, does anyone know why this might be?
