Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

Hi there,

I am struggling to get a USB multi card reader working. lsusb recognizes it as Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0cf2:6230 ENE Technology, Inc.

When I plug it in, this is the output in kernel.log:

I am looking for the SD-card, udev has created /dev/sde for this one. Yet:

$ sudo fdisk /dev/sde
Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.21.2).

Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

fdisk: unable to open /dev/sde: No medium found

Not sure how to continue further. So far, this has been my lead:

Jul 15 17:58:08 localhost kernel: [ 3008.212698] keucr: The driver only supports SM/MS card. To use SD card, please build driver/usb/storage/ums-eneub6250.ko

Both keucr and ums-eneub6250 are available on my system. It does not make a difference if I load either one of them manually with modprobe, or both. The keucr driver is in staging, so i suppose there are still issues with it.

I don't know how to progress with this. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

Could be the two drivers fight for the device, creating a mess. Blacklist keucr and reboot.

Re: Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

Good suggestion, but did not work. Tried blacklisting both. If keucr is blacklisted, /var/log/kernel.log looks like this:

Jul 15 18:56:29 localhost kernel: [ 174.453431] usb 1-5: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd
Jul 15 18:56:29 localhost kernel: [ 174.578815] scsi4 : usb-storage 1-5:1.0
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.580746] scsi 4:0:0:0: Direct-Access USB2.0 CardReader CF 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.582349] scsi 4:0:0:1: Direct-Access USB2.0 CardReader SM XD 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.584978] scsi 4:0:0:2: Direct-Access USB2.0 CardReader MS 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.585958] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.588474] scsi 4:0:0:3: Direct-Access USB2.0 CardReader SD 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.589319] sd 4:0:0:1: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.591950] sd 4:0:0:2: [sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk
Jul 15 18:56:30 localhost kernel: [ 175.596755] sd 4:0:0:3: [sde] Attached SCSI removable disk

fdisk cannot access any of the created /dev/sd[bcde]

lsmod shows the following:

$ lsmod | grep -i usb
usb_storage 35512 0
scsi_mod 112541 5 uas,usb_storage,libata,sd_mod,sr_mod
usbcore 123233 5 uas,uhci_hcd,usb_storage,ehci_hcd
usb_common 622 1 usbcore

So ums-eneub6250 does not get loaded. When loading this module manually, nothing seems to change, except for it showing up under usb_storage.

From what I gathered at the Linux Kernel Database, the keucr driver is needed for device 0cf2 6230 (this is what lsusb reports). It just seems not to be able to load its SD-capabilities.

Or can this module be configured somehow? Or should I look in the udev direction?

Re: Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

Both drivers are for the same device, but keucr handles SM cards, while ums-eneub6250 handles SD and some other cards.

Is this an external device? keucr/ums-eneub6250 are usually used for readers that are integrated into netbooks/laptops.

Re: Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

It is an external USB box. TechnoStar claims to have produced it in China. Model: CRAIO1000. These internal drives are usually also connected to a USB-port, right?

Nope, they're usually PCI/PCIe devices. The ENE 6250 and Realtek 5139 are a few of the exceptions.

If yours is an external device it probably doesn't need any special driver, all the translation logic is in the device itself, and what the machine sees is a standard usb storage device. That's my experience with external card readers. No idea why yours doesn't work. Have you tried different SD cards?

Re: Cannot access SD-card on ENE USB multi card reader

Tried a second one, exactly same brand & specs (Extrememory SDHC 16 Gb Hyperperformance). No difference. I have no other SD cards laying around.

Should something additional pop up in /var/log/kernel.log when I slide in a card?

Think I'll plug it in a windows machine somewhere tomorrow to see if the device itself is defective...

Thanks a lot, Gusar, for your help so far smile
