Getting gnome/gdm to work

Hi, I had to do a fresh install recently, but I can't get gdm/gnome to work. When I try to to start gdm it seems to start just fine, but it just shows a black screen with a clock cursor. I have googled the issue, but the only solution I've found is to change the password expiry for the gdm account. That didn't do anything for me. I'll include my :0-slave.log, since that seems to be the only thing with useful information, but I can't make any sense of it.

Edit: also, it says something about not being able to connect to dbus, but dbus is running.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Do you start gdm from inittab or rc.conf daemons?

I don't use it so I don't recall which, but only one of these seems to be working well based on see other threads.

I believe rc.conf was the method that worked better.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Have you got dbus running early in the daemons array and gdm last on the list? Had all sort of problems one time by messing the order of events up wink

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Alright, so to answer your questions:

Yes, I've been running it through rc.conf as a daemons, but it doesn't matter how I start it or how early dbus is started, it ALWAYS does this. I'm truly puzzled, as I've been using gdm on arch FOREVER. Nothing else is clean/simple enough for me. sad I might just switch to ubuntu as my system is plagued with problems I won't have time to fix any longer, especially since I've moved up to the mountains. But if you can help me fix this, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

And I don't know about you, luminary, but even when I just use slim to log in, it just shows the gnome cursor and wallpaper. Is it possible the gnome package is a little messed up?

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

I was having the same problem that Luminary is having.  After poking around for a long time I thought about the move from /var/run to /run.  On a whim I created a symlink from /var/run/dbus -> /run/dbus.

ln -s /run/dbus /var/run/dbus

After creating the sym link everything started working.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Same issue here.
Switching to tty, login as root and restart gdm solves the problem. But this is no satisfying solution of course.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Okay I have the same issue...Gnome can not start as normal user.Although I can run gnome-shell as root user by typing startx on root shell. But when I try startx from normal user tty , it just went blank...BTW I have tried running gdm by putting gdm last at rc.conf in daemon line..dbus first.

Then I try to run from inittab file...nope none of the method works.

Here is my xsession error enlisted...throw some light:

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

Hi, friendly advice to @unixbhaskar , change the <code> tags to [ code] tags, (just change the < to [ and the > to ])

In response to the issue, I think I found something for you @Luminary, just check for the existence of the directories included before you make any change, the post  I found is here

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

@ xangelux:
The solution suggested in the link unfortunately does not change a thing.

Since it seems a solution won't come quick here is a dirty workaround:

Add this to the end of your /etc/rc.local

sleep 2
/etc/rc.d/gdm restart

It works, but should be removed once gdm is fixed.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

I have the same problem "black screen with a clock cursor" with archlinux running as guest in a virtualbox on win xp.
The problem does not go away with

/etc/rc.d/gdm restart

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

@ drslmr
Maybe we should be more specific, there might be 2 different problems.
I have a working mouse on a black screen. This happens actually to every computer using GDM (4 machines!). All of them work by restarting GDM.
If you should have a clock symbol and no working mouse it might be something else.

Re: Getting gnome/gdm to work

@jcci right my problem is different

Unfortunately at the moment I don't have access to the machine
with the problem I posted about.

But the mouse sort of worked for me too. It was possible to move
the clock around on the black screen.

Still I believe there is something else wrong on my machine. Below
I post the Xorg.0.log and greeter.log:
