linux on ipod

i'm looking for a way to put songs on my ipod from the command line. can it be done? my arch64 server is happily running samba, daapd, and howl. so i would like to just be able to plug in my ipod shuffle and autosync. the autosync feature doesn't need to be there i can always write a script that does that, but is there a command line util for this? i haven't looked at gtkpod yet, but i was hoping i might be able to compile with --without-x or something like that d;-p. any ideas?
