I'm currently in kde4.8.4 w/ pacman v4.0.3 and libalpm v7.0.3
i have the opensource xf86-video-ati driver but want the proprietary w/ catalyst for better 3d rendering (mainly gaming in the jre and wine).
what is the best method of changing drivers?

Have you read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ca … repository ?

well i cant install both of them at the same time, can i?
do you suggest closing my x server first, then pacman -R xf86-video-ati then install the catalyst?

You don't even need to exit X. Remove xf86-video-ati. Do NOT restart the system. Install catalyst and catalyst-utils. Follow the wiki instructions for adding the fglrx module to the system modules and establishing xorg.conf. Then reboot.

ok thanks. One last question though. Can I just use the .run file off the amd website and just install it with the easy gui screen, or should i be safe and just install catalyst and catalyst-utils via pacman?

Use the packages from the Arch repos.
