USB Headset Annoyance (disables internal sound card persistently?)

I've been ArchLinux for a good 4 years.  This problems happens on both my archlinux systems, both are running gnome3 with compiz on top. 

Whenever I plug in my usb headset, it works fine, automatically switches to it also.  That part is great.  Then when I remove it, pulse I guess, won't recognize the internal soundcard at all, gnome-control-center just keeps saying dummy output and no other sound cards.  I thought it was my laptop being stupid because it was an intel hd card but my desktop is doing it too now.  The same glitch persists after rebooting also.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried using alsamixer and it shows up fine in there so I know the card is working properly. I've searched for a while but I can't find a post about it.

If it shows up in alsamixer but not Gnome, that sounds like it might be an issue with Gnome. I have a similar audio setup (USB headset + internal audio) and it works fine with Pulse + KDE.

Paste the output of:

cat /proc/asound/cards

It should show the two you have installed, probably even when it's not working. You might want to check some of the symlinks in /proc/asound prior to and after the issue.

I don't know enough about Gnome to suggest how you might fix that, so someone else will have to step in--but if you can collect some information about what the system thinks is still there, that should be helpful. Also, perhaps some searching for "gnome pulseaudio" might lead to further clues.
