New Arch User. Problem with filesize on NAS

Hi fellow arch users!

I got Arch up and running with Gnome 2.10 thanks to pacman. I'm a total noob when it comes to Linux and pacman is awesome. Kudos to the Arch developers for creating this tool!

Anyway, I was playing around with gnome and tried to access my NAS drive using smb. I successfully connected to it and was able to browse pictures and music files.

But there's some problems I noticed. First I tried to open an image file using GIMP, but it came up with some error saying that the file is not found..even when I right clicked on the image and chose open with GIMP. Does GIMP open files on network drives?

Then I tried to copy it to the local disk and open it up from there. However, when I dragged the pic to the local disk, it said there wasn't enough space on the drive! I have about 10 gigs free in the hard disk. So I went  and checked out the filesize on the NAS usin the file manager and it said some astronimical number like 323432344GB. I know for a fact that the image is less than 2mb. First time I looked at the directory, some images said 124mb, then the next time I refreshed the directory the filesize changed from 124 to 32423422gb.

I also dual boot windows xp, so I booted up windows and checked the filesizes to make sure I wasn't losing my mind and everything looked fine. Average filesize was about 3mb.

What's happening? Is it the NAS? Is it SMB? I don't know where to start looking.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: New Arch User. Problem with filesize on NAS

It could be samba.   Currently, samba 3.0.20-1 is broken.  There is a new package in the testing repo, but the best/easier way might be to downgrade samba:
pacman -U ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distribu … pkg.tar.gz

And Welcome to Arch! smile

Thanks.

I'll try that and see if it works.

Re: New Arch User. Problem with filesize on NAS

I installed samba 3.0.14.1 and rebooted the machine. Do I really need to reboot?

After the machine came up and I logged into Gnome, I then went into the network share and looked at the filesizes. I'm still getting the same problem, only this time the filesizes aren't as huge. Some files say 1.6GB while others say 772MB while still others say 56bytes.

Do I need to downgrade the gnome-vfs? When I did a pacman -Q gnome-vfs it says 2.10.1-4 I looked at the arch packages and I noticed a gnome-vfs-samba. Do I need this?

Thanks.

Chris.
