cups printing issue with HP printer

HP_Deskjet_F2400_series now stopped printing. (cups-pdf and xsane are working)

The error message is /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed and in the error_log it is  printer-state-message="/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops failed"

Packages:
cups : cups 1.5.3-5 ; filters : foomatic-filters 1:4.0.17_20120712-1, cups-filters 1.0.19-1

Let me know if any one got similar error and any workaround for this. I know there was one bug report and got it fixed.I also tried removing all printers and put them back.

Thanks

Re: cups printing issue with HP printer

Hi kgas,

I can confirm the same problem here, with an HP Laserjet 1120. Curiously, if you convert to PS and submit the job by hand, it works fine!

pdftops my_file.pdf # Generates my_file.ps
lpr my_file.ps # Sends to the default printer

Versions for cups, foomatic-filters and cups-filters match the ones on your post.

Any hints?

Thanks.

Re: cups printing issue with HP printer

I got an HP working again recently by setting the option pdftops-renderer=pdftops. It is not perfect - printing still isn't entirely issue-free - but it makes a really enormous difference. Most stuff prints whereas before hardly anything printed without so much coaxing and so slowly it made you think the Roman's were onto something chiselling stuff on stone. (I tried this in an attempt to avoid compiling cups myself and I still haven't been forced to do that. The option makes that much difference.)
