Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

Hi,

I have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo from Logitech (MK700 keyboard and MX705 mouse), which uses a USB receiver.

After booting, the mouse pointer sometimes is completely blocked, and I have to reboot to make it work. Sometimes I need to do this twice. I cannot reproduce it and this is not linked to the fact the mouse is active or on sleep mode. This seems to be a race condition, considering it is difficult to reproduce. Once the mouse pointer is working, there is no issue anymore during desktop use.

I compared lsmod when mouse pointer is working or not, and did not see any difference in the loaded modules.

This started to happen maybe 3 months ago. I have had this hardware for two years with no problem in the past. It is not a battery problem either.

Has anyone an idea?

Thanks.
Ther is indeed a difference in evedev detection in Xorg logs when mouse is working or not working.

Not working:

I note the differences start there:

(--) evdev: Logitech Unifying Device. Wireless PID:101b: Found x and y relative axes

vs

(II) evdev: Logitech Unifying Device. Wireless PID:2008: Forcing relative x/y axes to exist.

Could my Logitech camera interfere with the keyboard/mouse unifier detection?

Re: Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

Note that restarting X, when the pointer is not moving, does not fix the problem. I have to reboot (sometimes several times) until the pointer is responding to mouse movements.

Re: Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

I still suffer this problem as of today. Sometimes I need to reboot 4 times in a row to have my mouse working, sometimes it works straight away. It really looks like a race condition, considering it is difficult to trigger it in a reproducible way. Am I the only one having this issue?

Re: Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

It's not a solution, but have you tried to unplug the USB dongle and plugging it in again instead of rebooting?

I have a similar problem with an external HD. The only consistency that I found is that once it is detected, it keeps being detected when rebooting.

Re: Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

Yes, it does not work. The difference in the X logs when it is detected/undetected suggests it is at boot time. Also, restarting the X server only does not fix, I have to reboot. But dmesg outputs are the same either it fails or not.

Re: Wireless mouse pointer which does not move after boot *sometimes*

I can report this is still happening, but I found on Launchpad a thread that describes the same issue (with various symptoms) and a workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/958174

This workaround works for me if the mouse does not work at start:

sudo modprobe -r hid_logitech_dj && sleep 1s && sudo modprobe hid_logitech_dj

The problem is the commit 4ea5454203d991ec in hid_logitech_dj, which interferes with the semaphores in the code of the module. This is consistent with the fact the problem is difficult to reproduce and that it is race-dependent. The developers are working on a patch, so there is no need for me to fill a bug report on Arch, since this will be dealt upstream.
