[Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

Hi Everyone, lately I have been getting quite a few random kernel panic (starting noticing them at some point on the 3.4.x kernel, currently have testing enabled and 3.5 was just pushed). I have a T510 with an Intel Core i5 M520 and 8 gigs of ram and Intel graphics (latest release2.20.1-1) . Ran through a full pass and a half (~ an 1 and 1/2  hours) of memtest and that passed with flying colors. Panics are pretty random, ranging from sudo to pidgin to firefox (multiple). Also getting quite a few trying to compile Firefox 14 w/ PGO. Anyways, the panics are:

As I said, it is pretty random, sometimes occuring soon after boot, other times I can get through the day w/ multiple suspends and resumes/etc. I have found that attempting to compile firefox-kde-opensuse w/ PGO and JEMALLOC enabled in a clean chroot generally causes a kernel panic when it gets to the PGO stage (probably related, although maybe the package itself).

uname -r:
3.5.0-1-ARCH
(like I said it started happening somwhere on the 3.4.x branch). Any ideas anyone?

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

Just got another kernel panic, but it somehow didn't end up in /var/log/kernel.log for some odd reason. It was in yet another/different application (swapper I believe, didn't get a camera shot of it). Any ideas anyone, or anyone experiencing something similar ?

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

All your panics are "Tainted: G". Can you try without the vboxdrv module installed? Just to be sure that is a problem inside vanilla kernel and not elsewhere.

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

Hey, thanks for the reply. It would be pretty funny if it was the virtual box module causing all of these problems (I was not actually using the user space application when any of these happened). Anyways, I removed it from loading the module in my rc.conf and reboot - will report back if I trigger a panic again (seem to happen a bit less lately - but generally 1 a day).

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

The virtualbox module has a reputation for being "tainted crap" according to Dave Jones.  So if you remove it and there's no panics, well there you go.  As much as I hate to say it, VMware is much superior to VirtualBox at least in terms of code quality and reliability.

Actually it doesn't matter if you're using the vbox app or not. A kernel module can crash everything even being totally idle.

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

Just to be clear, these are not panics.  The kernel has detected issues and regards itself as tainted.  When it panics, it is so confused it will halt rather than risk corrupting something.

Re: [Solved] Multiple Kernel Panics

OK, update. I removed the virtual box module from being loaded, and after about a week, no more hard crashes (thanks ewaller for the clarification - I just called them panics as they looked rather similar to them and took down my system anyways, lol). So yes, I concur, there is something funky with the virtual box module and the 3.5 kernel series. Saw Pacman pull down an updated package (just -X release, not a new version) of it - maybe that fixes it, but, I don't currently really need my VM until the next time I need to test in IE7 (double *sigh*) and don't feel like using my actual windows box (double *sigh*). Next time I need it, I might just tree out VMWare, I think there is still a free version of some sort that allows a Windows VM.
