Gnome shell volume control

The volume control in Gnome3 is set to use pulseaudio by default, correct? I have had problems in the past with PulseAudio and am now going through more trouble (Pulseaudio will only detect a "Dummy Output"). Is there any way possible to have ALSA or OSS be the backend for the Volume control in GNOME shell?
