No ouput with AMD Hudson Azalia on HP dv6

Having some trouble getting sound to work on my system.  Originally tried with alsa alone, and eventually installed pulseaudio on top of it.  No joy so far.  Tried with a bunch of /etc/modprobe.d/[alsa].conf options.  Everything is unmuted with alsamixer.  I got everything to seem fine without any actual speaker output.

Any ideas on how I should proceed or what I might try?

Re: No ouput with AMD Hudson Azalia on HP dv6

Could someone point me in the direction of what might be the problem at least?  I've tried with and without pulse, Google's got nothing, works in Windows, and I'm lost.  Even if I could pinpoint it to a single package and head upstream if necessary, that would be fine.

Re: No ouput with AMD Hudson Azalia on HP dv6

If you are running an Xorg environment, Load and run pavucontrol.  See if it sees audio levels at the input, when a new program pops up, it creates a new level meter and set of controls in the playback tab.  Launch, for example, mplayer and see if a control appears and if it indicates activity.  Also, you can control muting there.

If that all works, pop over to the output tab and see if the levels there indicate that audio is being output, again, make sure it is not muted.  If there is activity there, pulse thinks it is making sound.  If it is not, try changing the output device from that tab.

Okay, so magic.  Without making any changes things started working.  Maybe with a reboot.
