cannot modprobe shpchp (even as root)

[root@localhost ~]# modprobe shpchp
FATAL: Error inserting shpchp (/lib/modules/2.6.13-archck5/kernel/drivers/pci/hotplug/shpchp.ko): Operation not permitted

WTF? What's going on here?

Re: cannot modprobe shpchp (even as root)

This is for PCI hotplugging. Does your hardware support it?

Re: cannot modprobe shpchp (even as root)

I'm pretty sure this VIA chipset does. Also, if the hardware doesn't support it, shouldn't I get a "no such device" error?

I think you're right. On my system:

# modprobe hw_random
FATAL: Error inserting hw_random (/lib/modules/2.6.12-ARCH/kernel/drivers/char/hw_random.ko): No such device

. Then, I don't know.

insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

Re: cannot modprobe shpchp (even as root)

pci_hotplug: PCI Hot Plug PCI Core version: 0.5
shpchp: acpi_shpchprm:_SB_.PCI0 evaluate _BBN fail=0x5
shpchp: acpi_shpchprm:get_device PCI ROOT HID fail=0x5

Now that is a cryptic error message if I ever saw one.
