Back to Arch

I am coming back to Arch Linux.  I had tried Arch Linux a month ago.  I liked what I saw.  It did have a few rough edges.  However, I went back to FreeBSD for one reason or another.   I can not remember.  However, recently I built myself a new computer.

P4 2.6GHz 800MHz FSB
Intel D865PERL
1GB 400MHz DDR PC3200 RAM
Radeon 9800
80GB WD 7200 ATA100 HDD
DVD Drive
CD Burner
Has onboard sound... but FreeBSD did not like it so I put my SB Live back in.  I will try the on board stuff again when I get back in Linux.

So, why am I coming back?  I liked what I saw when I tried Arch before.  I need a such a recent FreeBSD for the network adapter to work that I also had to use their new ATA code.  This breaks many ports that depend on ATAPI functionality.  So, it is kinda borked for me right now.

Anyway, maybe when FreeBSD reaches 5-STABLE. I will re-evaluate things.  But for now.  I am loading Arch on this box.

Re: Back to Arch

I just came back this week.  Installed 0.5 awhile back in my slack9 partition.  Liked it but was lured away by slack9.1.  IMHO, other than pacman, there is little to differentiate between the two as far as usability and speed.  Pacman got me back.  Beats swaret and linuxpackages in ease of use and dependence resolution.

Re: Back to Arch

Going to reinstall Arch again.  I came back due to new hardware.  Then had a font issue with X.  So, I went back to FreeBSD to see if that was the cause.  Had the same problem there so it was not Arch's X configuration or the ati-drivers I was using.  It was that the radeon support found in the ATI drivers and the XFree86 4.3.99 snapshot use a different DPI than XFree86 4.3.0 did on my old Voodoo3 2000 card.  So, now I know the fix.  I am going to come back.  Plus xine DVD playing works.  On FreeBSD, it works if you think choppy video is nice.  However, I like xine the best because it is the only player that I have tried so far wuch uses the DVD menus.

Re: Back to Arch

To answer the question:

Search Feature

It is a great tool to dig through old posts.  You feed it keywords and it responds with posts that contain them.  That is how it is done. smile

Now for an update to my original post.   I am coming back yet again.  I was running Arch then dumped it for Mandrake (hey I wanted to see what it was really like).  Some things I hated, some I liked.  I felt powerless using it.  So, with the release of FreeBSD 5.2-RC1 I thought I would give it a go again.  Well, still get panic's at the end of installation when the box goes to reboot.

So, Linux seems to really like this box.  So, it is going to stay for the long term.  Arch Linux will be the distro of choice.

Re: Back to Arch

Yea I knew of the search feature, I guess my exaserbation was why someone who wanted to post about returning to AL would go dig up someone else's old thread.

One thread to rule them all,
One thread to find them,
One thread to bring them all
And in the darkness, bind them
