Looking for hardware (PCI Wireless LAN)

I'm looking for a PCI Wireless LAN card that will work well with Linux, does anyone know of any place that documents this sort of thing? (as in a list)

The Linux-wlan HCL is always a good place to start. The last update was Feb 2004, but it's still a very comprehensive resource. Apart from that, go to the different driver project websites and look for their HCLs.

I can personally recommend the D-Link DWL-G520. It's Atheros-based and works perfectly in my AP with the madwifi driver.

Be careful with D-Link. They have strange naming policies and it might happen that you buy a card that seems the same as yours (same name etc) but has another (probably unsupported) chipset.

atheros-chipset based cards are the "best" in linux today (modern prism54-based cards aren't that great).
Luckily, atheros themselves have a page that lists every card that uses their chipset, and I think it's pretty up to date

Okay, just figured out i can't use pci, because there are no slots available...fucking dells...i'll have to look at some other options

(Yep, I know all about Dell... Computers with no AGP slots, hard drives that can't be replaced, no extra drive bays, no PS/2 ports, all sorts of absolute garbage...)

what is a CNR slot?

Just for reference, i didn't buy this garbage...it belongs to my girlfriend and she bought it before we met.

I think it's other option, singular - as in USB? I recently had to switch wifi to USB myself, when my laptop's card slots died. After a bit of research, I went for the prism2 chipset with the wlan-ng driver - specifically, the Netgear MA111. It's all working fine now, but in retrospect, I'd probably go for something that works better with wireless_tools.

AFAICS, there aren't any stable drivers for 802.11g over USB - madwifi may or may not do it, depending on Atheros, prism54 is trying, and they have pre-alpha stuff available for the brave/foolish, and there's also the zd1211 project on sourceforge.

Yeah - I always forget about ndiswrapper, because I prefer "real" drivers.

By all accounts, it works well, although some functionality that's taken for granted in established Linux drivers is not implemented e.g. monitor mode.

Using ndiswrapper(.sf.net)?
The kernel has to emulate a windows environment so that the native windows driver can be used.
The performance isn't that great (with my card it isn't), and the more activity, the more load on your computer.
