Minecraft Update 18 Java ZIP read error

I just updated my minecraft installation to the latest version, but now the client won't load.  Running the command in a terminal gives the following error (after a long period of the computer thinking about it...)

$ minecraft
asdf
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre/lib/rt.jar: ZIP_Read: error reading zip file

I've been searching for any help on this, but no dice so far... any ideas?

Pertinent info:

$ pacman -Q minecraft minecraft-server
minecraft latest-18
minecraft-server 1:1.3.1-1

$ pacman -Q jre7-openjdk openal xorg-server-utils
jre7-openjdk 7.u5_2.2.1-1
openal 1.14-1
xorg-server-utils 7.6-3

The server seems to load fine, but since I can't run the client I can't be certain.

Re: Minecraft Update 18 Java ZIP read error

Have you tried launching it directly?

java -Xmx1024m -Xms1024m -cp /usr/share/minecraft/minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame

Almost looks like it might be a classpath issue. Something is missing or cannot be found as the first line of the error indicates:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/swing/text/html/HTMLDocument

Also, do you have either of jdk7-openjdk or jre7-openjdk-headless installed?

Re: Minecraft Update 18 Java ZIP read error

Running directly results in the same error, and both jre's are installed.

$ pacman -Ss jre
extra/jre7-openjdk 7.u5_2.2.1-1 [installed]
    Free Java environment based on OpenJDK 7.0 with IcedTea7 replacing binary plugs -Full
    Java runtime environment - needed for executing Java GUI and Webstart programs
extra/jre7-openjdk-headless 7.u5_2.2.1-1 [installed]
    Free Java environment based on OpenJDK 7.0 with IcedTea7 replacing binary plugs -
    Minimal Java runtime - needed for executing non GUI Java programs

Re: Minecraft Update 18 Java ZIP read error

I still have a hunch that there's something missing or a busted classpath somewhere. Try collecting the output from strace:

strace -e trace=open java -Xmx1024m -Xms1024m -cp /usr/share/minecraft/minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame

and post it here.

Also, it might be worth downloading an older version of the launcher. Here are the file details:

[gridlock:~]$ ls -al minecraft/minecraft.jar
-rw-r--r-- 1 bshelton bshelton 89406 Jul 24  2011 minecraft/minecraft.jar
[gridlock:~]$ md5sum minecraft/minecraft.jar
6e053e85cd4920f7aaf26c4455b50ce7  minecraft/minecraft.jar

There appear to be some downloads of it here.

Note to others: This is just the launcher. Distributing the launcher alone is probably a legal gray area (but I doubt Mojang cares). That said, you can't use the full version of Minecraft without first logging into a premium account. The launcher's responsibility then is to handle user authentication and downloading of Minecraft's data files after the user's account status is verified. There's also a 5 day premium trial now, I think. Be sure to verify the md5sum of it before running--there are undoubtedly cracked launchers around the Internet with the sole purpose of collecting your login details!
