Video corruption (?) when booting recent packaged kernel

I am not sure how to describe this, but I grabbed the screen buffer with gpm:

INIT: version 2.88 booting

Module issues aside, anyone know what this video corruption could be about?  It prints out normally at first, then those few lines change to "unicode spam" after running through some init.  I don't event remember what is loading on that last line of corruption (perhaps that is causing it?)

This started happening after a system update I ran today.  The system is pretty "vanilla".  Default grub-legacy config and no framebuffer, no modules loaded from /etc/modules-load.d/, rc.conf is as bare as possible (only one DAEMONS line).

Re: Video corruption (?) when booting recent packaged kernel

I spent some time eliminating the other errors in-case they are relevant.  Corruption still occurs.

Notes:
* forced  k10temp module
* microcode patches are now successful
* blacklisted sp5100_tco, looks pointless
* unrelated realtek issue hopefully getting fixed upstream:  https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/6/8/537
