[SOLVED]trilogy: mpd can't start, can't run alsaequal, foobar no audio

My favourite media players don't work in arch.

I tried everything and can't get mpd to update my database. I get this error. When it starts it is reading the drive but nothing is getting written to the database file. My conf file is fine I have used it many times on my crunchbang distro.

I used to install apt-get install libasound2-plugin-equal in crunchbang to get the alsaequalizer and mixer in one. I cant find that package but I did install the separate alsaequal, and alsamixer programs. both of which will not start.

And as a final nail in the coffin, my belived foobar, which worked flawlessly under wine can't output to anything but 'Null Output'. I can't get it to output to Pulseaudio the way I had it before.

I installed pulseaudio already. I don't know what else to install.
ANyone have any solutions?

You should install the package "pkgfile" -- this is a package searching utility. Then you can type

pkgfile alsamixer

and find that it is in the package "alsa-utils" (actually the same package that contains alsamixer in Debian) -- did you install that package?

Just a friendly tip -- you won't win any friends here by constantly saying "this worked fine in crunchbang"

And I'm just curious -- if you had all this stuff working so well on #!, why'd you decide to switch to Arch?

Thanks i'll give it a try.
And there's no way I am going bak to #! now. yaourt is the best package manager on the planet.:D I am finding packages I have to find and compile myself! Not to mention the speed! It's worth the effort and headaches in my opinion. Nothing wrong with taking my linux knowledge to another level.

Two of the three issues are fixed now. I was missing alsa-utils before. Now the mixer works fine. I can get audio out of foobar now that I've installed the 32bit libraries for pulse.

I am not sure I understand the mpd issue.

Are you running it as a user, or system wide? (Please say user)
If you are running it as a user, mpd should not be in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf, rather there should be a mechanism to start it at login. Typically this is an desktop file entry in ~/.config/autostart.

Check that, and check the ownership and permissions on ~/.mpd and all of its contents. If you have ever run mpd as root, it may be you do not own those directories.
Also, you refer to your config file for mpd. Archbang is not Arch, that is why we are adamant about not supporting it on these boards. I realize you are migrating to Arch, so lets see if they have done something non-Arch. Is this file ~/.mpdconf, or is it /etc/mpd ?

Finally, you might try killing mpd and then relaunch it from a command line with the --verbose and --no-daemon options. See what it spits out to the console for hints.

Edit: Oh, BTW, you might post the config file you are using.

I was running mpd as a user but I did have it in the Daemon array. So I removed that and have an autotart link to it but that did not work. I changed the owner of all the files required to my user name and the groups to user. All permissions to read/write.
I was using crunchbang not archbang before, I understand the fact that obviously not as much stuff gets installd as that distro. I am just trying to fiure out what's missing. I am using ~/.mpd/mpd.conf for a a config. All the necessary files except for sticker.sql (the file i seem to be having issues with) are in ~/.mpd.
The only error am getting seems to have to do with sqlite and the sticker file:

Failed to create sticker table: unable to open database file

When I comment out the line for the sticker file in mpd.conf I can run mpd but it will not update the files. On first run it looks like it's reading the files in my music directoy but nothing gets entered into the db file.

here is the verbose output

right... first: comment out the sticker file option. stickers are not used by any of the clients - you can safely consider this a dead feature.
second, binding to "localhost" can give problems, as mpd tends to prefer the ipv6 interface. you probably want to bind to 127.0.0.1 and/or to your LAN IP (of the machine mpd is running on)

for the database file: just delete it and run mpd again, it will automatically recreate it. But you have to know that the file is NOT written, before all files have been indexed.
If it still does not work, paste the output of

mpd --stdout --no-damon --verbose

If you read the MPD wiki, at the end is a script that sets mpd to a user. Its a very handy script and has yet to fail me. I deleted my non-working mpd.conf files, ran the script and profit. Not sure it will fix your issue but just a thought. I did have to use the full path to my music dir, IE /home/user/Music
