modprobe is crashing during custom kernel boot.
Hi!
I've a problem: modprobe and udevd are crashing during boot. I'm using selfbuild zen kernel without initrd.

Seems I've got an answer. Enable CONFIG_KALLSYMS (Configure standard kernel features ->Load all symbols for debugging/ksymoops) and the crash disappears.

This problem appeared for me when I ported our code
from 2.6.36.4 to 3.2.16 - its quite annoying. Happens
when loading some modules. Used to also hang the
the kernel when one used 'ps alx' - WCHAN sym lookup
no doubt. As of 3.2.19 ps no long hangs the kernel, and
WCHAN just shows hex addr's - as it should.

#1. This flag is clearly intended to work - ie if you disable KALLSYMS
you should still get a working kernel.
#2 It makes my image about 100k bigger which causes me to have
to use lzma compression instead of zlib, which in turn takes 3 secs
longer to boot - Not only am I insane, but I'm also impatient.

Perhaps this is not the right place to be asking this question.
Clearly KALLSYMS should work properly, or should be eliminated.
So, I suppose at some point I'll dive in there and track it down,
but I'm surprised that it being tolerated - embedded systems
kind of like thing to as small possible - IMHO

I finally tracked this down to
kernel/module.c, line 2607 (linux-3.2.25)
ptr = module_alloc_update_bounds(mod->init_size);
mod->init_size is zero for some modules when KALLSYMS is disabled.
Somewhere down in module_alloc_update_bounds or its children
a dump is called when 0 size is passed in. I added a test around
the relevant code and all is well now (

I'm happy that someone investigated this and solved the problem, I also think this should be reported in kernel bugzilla.
I'll try this with vanila kernel this week and will check if this still exist.
