I'm running Arch Linux with KDE. When I plug my camera into my USB port, I can see it via lsusb (below) but in System Settings -> Removable Devices, I don't see it. It also is not auto-mounting even though I have selected "Enable automatic mounting of removable media".

Just because the camera shows up in the output of lsusb doesn't mean much, people here will need more than that, such as the output of dmesg after you plug the camera and if mounting manually works. Most probably you are doing something wrong and you should check all of the camera settings.

what if you simply try to mount the device with
# mount -t vfat -o ro /dev/sdXY /mnt/camera # ro just to be safe, and most cameras use a vfat fs, replace X and Y
to do automounting of removable devices you can do the following:

Okay, so far, so good.
Find or create an empty mount point (/mnt, for example, might be a good choice if nothing is mounted there) Then, try:
sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt
and see what happens. If it works, try
sudo ls /mnt
Upon further thought, if the above does not work, try it with sdb1 instead of sdb. The dmesg output looks like it may appear as a partitioned device. That may be why it does not auto mount.

When trying to mount it, I get this error:
[root@arch ~]# mount /dev/sdb /mnt

The first time I tried "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt", it worked and I was able to successfully browse the camera. So I turned off the camera, unplugged it, then plugged it back in and turned it on and now that same command does not work.

mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not existWas that not the proper way to unmount it? If not, what is?
After we resolve this, what is the proper way to have this auto mount and unmount?

My guess is that your computer probably stuck it into sdc1 after unplugging and plugging back in (I've had that happen before), did you check your dmesg again to make sure it is still sdb1?

Autofs from the repo's is supposed to help you with auto-mounting. Not sure about how KDE does things though...
As for properly mounting/unmounting, I always just use the "mount /dev/sdXY /media/folder" and "umount /dev/sdXY" which works great for me, not auto mounting, but it works well.

I have a hunch that the auto mount stuff works for things that are not partitioned. i.e. where the entire drive is formated with one file system and there are not multiple partitions. I state that without proof and may very well be wrong

Even if the partition doesn't get automatically mounted after you plug the camera, the detected partitions, only 1 in this case, should show up in the file manager and as you try to access the partition it should get automatically mounted.
As for the way to disconnect and unmount the camera, you should have a way to safely remove/eject the partition/device, use that and wait a little until it says it is safe, also always check on the device itself, if possible, if there is still some activity before disconnecting it because sometimes there is still some activity after you are told that it is safe to remove the device.

I've been playing around with autofs but the automounting still isn't working. When I start the autofs daemon, I see a "/mnt/usbstick/" folder but nothing else. I can still manually mount it and it works. Any ideas on this?
