A kernel message log would be useful.
After trying to run X get to a console and run
dmesg
which will give you some more info - post that to this list.

I'm running standard kernel from [testing] and i think the problem started when i enabled the testing repo and upgraded everything.
I have a limited amount of sympathy for you then

Good point - I humbly apologise

i have this same problem, only everything ive tried doesnt work. i have seen other posts as far back as april with this issue. it only happens when i upgrade the whole system to testing, get a new kernel and switch to udev

wish i knew. im talking about this in another thread about kde 3.5, you need to sync to testing to get updated packages in order to use kde 3.5 and this is when the issue arrises. not sure if it is the updated kernel causing it, the change to udev from devfs, the nvidia package not being patched right or what
that thread is http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=114359
my posts are near the end, but i have also seen others about this, dating back to around april this year, maybe earlier than that, so this isnt something new

yep, good, at least the developers are aware. is this then an nvidia problem or the package maintainers for nvidia-legacy for arch?

Very odd problem:
Right after i install nvidia or nvidia-legacy, i am able to normally start X by entering telinit 5. Everything's fine until i reboot. Then X server is unable to start because kernel can't find nvidia module! Here's the tail of Xorg.0.log:
[code]
(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888
(==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
I have met the same question

if u look at the thread i posted, the only thing which fixed the issue for me when i had this problem was adding the two mknod lines into my rc.sysinit.
i dont have this problem anymore, but i assume the reason for all this is udev. if u still having this problem, seems thats the only solution atm.

fixed nvidia-legacy, please add nvidia module again to rc.conf and all should be fine.

i needed nvidia after reboot in rc.conf. and no normal package is not affected only the legacy package.
