So, you think I should spend my time maintaining 5 pkgs for kernels that change on a regular basis to save the normal user the inconvience of compiling their own as and when necessary? Are you serious? Do you honestly believe that any distro that does not have considerable financial backing would even consider this? Aside from the fact that ABS and the ability to create your own versions of any pkg quickly and simply are the very core strengths of Arch Linux itself! I mean, could I have made the PKGBUILD anymore easy to adapt to different kernels? And do I even use the ati-drivers? No!

Can you fully appreciate the sheer contemptability of such requests?

Hi,
thank you for replying to my problem.

The problem comes from the ati-drivers.
I believe the kernel26 stock kernel is great but if you like gensplash,ck like me you have to go withe the great kernel26archck.
I currently use kernel26archck1 with ati-drivers from [community].
They are a great combination.
I will continue to use kernel26archck as my kernel because i think it is very stable and fast.
The problem is that if the new drivers will be built against stock-kernel I cannot get them to recompile for kernel26archck correctly thats why I proposed to have ati-drivers combined with kernel26archck and not the stock kernel. I don't know what the problem is and they don't compile right and how to solve it and I have to stick with kernel26archck1.

dtw does a great job and he is right that he cannot maintain 5 kernel packages for each user need.

giorgio - I'm using a custom 2.6.13-archck5 kernel, and I have successfully created an ati-drivers package against it. Can you post the errors you are getting when you try it?

I'm using the community archck5. Surprised me for a moment that the ati-drivers hadn't been updated -- since I use dual-head, I think, X wouldn't even load!
I ended up putting in my Knoppix CD to change Arch's boot-time init level to 3. I booted back into non-graphical Arch, then used lynx to grab the PKGBUILD and whatnot for ati-drivers from the AUR -- didn't realize until now that ABS could be very easily configured to grab AUR packages... DOH!

It needed a minor, minor package change (kernel version), and makepkg worked flawlessly to build my new version.

Now I'm back in the game. WOOT!

I finally did it.
I compiled the ati-drivers against kernel26archkck5 and everything works fine.
The problem sould have been that in the previous time I hadn't removed the ati-drivers package and rebooted before recompiling.

Ah - so no problem at all then really? Just a bit if user error? Good to know - at least it is fixed and everyone is happy
