DId you just install this or do you seriously have 261 updates? If you just installed, I'm guessing you didn't use the new net-install ISO...
Search around a bit for the GLIBC update issue. It is also talked about on the main page http://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib-d … a-symlink/

Did you chroot before running pacman (if this is a new installation)?
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
Look ma, no mouse.

You really need to update more often if you ask me and keep an eye on the news page for special update instructions from the Devs...

How often should I update with pacman, what's the official recommendation?
Offline
I think there is no official recommendation, but I update every time I actively use a machine. For most of my machines, that means at least once a day.
The Archlinux devs put package-updates in the repository for us to use them

Weekly at least, preferably daily.
EDIT: That's my opinion, nobody else's and certainly not official of which there is no recommendation

I had the same issue with glibc as OP but I used --force option without reading about consequences. My system is not booting up now. Is there a way to fix it without reinstalling the whole system?
Offline
@newgargamel, it seems like this is a related issue, yet not the same. It may be adviseable to start a new thread to really get help.
To answer the question regarding recommended update schedule, I personally update once every couple of days at most, typically daily. I guess it depends on if I am at home with great bandwidth, or out and about...
