Printer problems (HP OJ6310) since reinstall

Having majorly borked my system, I did a clean install from the Arch 2012.08.04 CD, since when, I have two strange problems with my HP OfficeJet 6310 All-in-one printer.

The first one is that, when I fire up xsane, it fails to detect the scanner, but if I go into the HP toolbox, select the printer and then select Actions > Scan, up comes xsane and everything works just fine.

The second problem is that the printing looks as though every so often the ink is not getting to the print head [1] but if I print the document to the cups-pdf printer and then load it into acroread, it prints just fine.  This is further complicated by the fact that , just occasionally, the document *will* print OK directly.  I've tried printing from Firefox, LibreOffice (Writer and Calc), Thunderbird and vim and have the same problem with all of them.

I've tried Googling, but can only find years old mentions of the scanner not being recognised and nothing for the printing problem.  Running xsane from the terminal gives no output, useful or otherwise.

Any ideas?  Many thanks, in advance,

David Shaw
