[SOLVED]user@(none)

Hello.

First I have to admit that I was really irresponsible because i never merged the .pacnew files after updates, but today I decided that it was time to do it, so I used Meld with the script provided in the archwiki.

Everything ran Ok until I restarted, mpd stop working (it shows an error about it at boot but I haven't been able to read it), the ctr+v and ctr+c shortcuts stopped working, some programs like pidgin failed to start after xfce have loaded, and finally when I open the terminal it says "pedro@(none)".

After some research I found that I had to add fsck, usr and shutdown to the mkinitcpio.conf file. That actually solved the shortcut's problem, but the others remain the same...

So... What can I do to solve this? (yes, from now on I'm merging those .pacnew's just after I update the system).

Thanks in advance...

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

The "(none)" in the prompt would most likely be due to a missing or malformed /etc/hosts file.

The error at boot that you couldn't see can be found in /var/log, most likely in the boot log, or errors log.

The programs failing to start can be troubleshot by checking the xorg output and/or the Xorg logs in /var/log.

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

Here is the copy of the hosts file:

#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#

#<ip-address>	<hostname.domain.org>	<hostname>
127.0.0.1	localhost.localdomain	localhost arch
::1		localhost.localdomain	localhost

# End of file

No... I have the last version of the rc.conf

#
# /etc/rc.conf - configuration file for initscripts
#
# Most of rc.conf has been replaced by various other configuration
# files. See archlinux(7) for details.
#
# For more details on rc.conf see rc.conf(5).
#

DAEMONS=(ntpd syslog-ng dbus crond slim @wicd @cupsd)

# Storage
#
# USEDMRAID="no"
# USELVM="no"

# Network
#
# interface=
# address=
# netmask=
# gateway=

What does this mean?

Mon Aug 13 16:33:44 2012: :: Removing leftover files [BUSY] [/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/mpd.conf:1] Unknown group 'mpd'.

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

Having been a Gentoo user for a short time, I came to really like the etc-update utility.  There is a version in AUR that is made to work with Arch, I use it all the time (or whenever I need to rather).  I really like how it allows you to interactively merge, in addition to simply replacing or discarding new config files.

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

Thanks WonderWoofy! I will consider using it in future time...

Does someone know which might be the problem?

Is your hostname really "arch"?

What is in /etc/hostname?

cat /etc/hostname

Yeah that is my hostname, or at least it was before I had this problem...

Here is the output:

[pedro@(none) ~]$ cat /etc/hostname
cat: /etc/hostname: No such file or directory

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

I've created the file "hostname" (I might erased it by mistake when I was merging the files...). That actually solved the "@(none)" problem big_smile, so thank you 2ManyDogs!

Any ideas on what could be the problem with mpd? especially with this error:

Mon Aug 13 16:33:44 2012: :: Removing leftover files [BUSY] [/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/mpd.conf:1] Unknown group 'mpd'.

Oh, Sorry Allan... Do you have any ideas on the mpd error I posted?

Re: [SOLVED]user@(none)

It looks like you need a group "mpd" on your system.   I would have thought mpd would create that on install, but I don't use it to check.

Thank you Allan,  creating the group "mpd" solved the problem! I also had to make some changes to the mpd.conf, but now everything is running smoothly.
