[SOLVED] strange wine problem in steam - no text

i'm not sure if it was specific to the recent upgrade to wine or maybe something dumb i did by letting wine try to install .net and gecko, but whatever it was, the result was when i start Steam, i am given windows with no text at all.

fortunately, when i launch counter-strike: source, there is text. but i was wondering if anyone has seen this before?

$ pacman -Q | grep wine
wine 1.5.10-1
winetricks 20120308-1

For the impatient: run Steam with the -no-dwrite option, like this:

wine /path/to/Steam.exe -no-dwrite
