[SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

My microphone works on Windows but not on any Linux. Its been like this for a while now and I'm tired of using Windows so I'm determined to get my microphone working on ArchLinux. Everything else is perfect... Anyway lets start.

My sound works absolutely fine, my microphone is NOT muted, I have gone through all the steps on the wiki for fixing sound/internal microphones. Yet my microphone is not working. I've tried it on a root account so its not a permission issue either. Here are some outputs, please tell me if anything else is needed to determine the problem. Though I have experience with Linux I wouldn't consider myself an expert, and I know even less about the workings of sound cards.

Thank you in advance, I hope it is something simple that I missed so I can move on with my life.

What are you using to record?

Do you have Pulseaudio install or just ALSA?

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

I have both-installed every possible package with their name in them as well. (ie alsa-utils pulseaudio-alsa alsa-tools alsa-firmware)
I used the command to record ( arecord -d 5 test-mic.wav ) and I've tried with Google Voice (what I ultimately need it for) as well as skype.

and the alsa daemon is running.

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

You should have more channels than that. Are you sure you haven't blacklisted the wrong module?

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

well I'm not really sure of anything when it comes to this stuff, and this is why I'm here.
But it wasn't working before I started blacklisting things, just followed the wiki and blacklisted stuff that were said to work.

Recently I found a thing on the wiki for Acer One laptops (not mine but similar). It was to compile the alsa-driver with --with-card=hda_intel --with-card-options=hda_codec_realtek
this seams like it should work for me because even on windows my microphone doesn't work (but my sound does) until I install the realtek driver.

But now I have a different problem, aur's alsa-driver, though I can compile it with these options, when it gets to my system it seems orphaned and useless. I don't think my system is using it. Do you know what the reason for this might be? If the compiled "alsa-driver" package will work then how do I get that package to work on my system?

I will take all the blacklists out and reinstall all the sound functionality (starting with the new "alsa-driver". If you can think of anything please tell me.

oh and fyi I believe this laptop has mono-audio, could that be a reason I have only two channels?

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

Well...I have the same Intel HDA card in my laptop and I think I found the solution. Install pavucontrol, go to the 'configuration' tab and select 'analog duplex' for your profile. This should enable both the laptop speakers and microphone to work (although my microphone records sounds like crap!). For some reason the default was 'analog stereo output' which kills the microphone!

One of the few cases where a GUI seemed to have an easier answer tongue

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

Thanks for the reply! I'll try that when I get home. I'll mark this thread as solved if it works!

You say it sounds horrible-does that mean your microphone sounds better normally or its just a bad microphone? because my microphone is already pretty bad I don't think it would be audible for the receiver if it was any worse haha

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

Heh...I didn't know HOW my microphone sounded until I figured this out!! Haven't tested it on G+ yet (also my primary need to get it working). I wonder if my bluetooth headset would work....hmmmm....

FYI, there was a section in the Pulseaudio wiki article on troubleshooting that led me to this solution (indirectly).

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

haha you know right after you said it I found that piece of information as well, but I found it from a link part of Acer Aspire One (internal microphone not working) -> PulseAudio page. What a weird fix, hope it works for me, I think I uninstalled my driver when removing everything so my sound card isn't detected at all right now but I'm reinstalling so hopefully it'll work, else i'll have another problem on my hands.

Re: [SOLVED] Internal Microphone on Acer Aspire 1410

By the way since you have this same problem.

I noticed that if you increase the other side of the capture volume, the volume decreases a bit but the quality increases. so if you can come up with some sort of medium it would be beneficial. I speculate that this is because the two sides are for noise cancellation, when completely removing one side you get no noise cancellation, and maybe for some reason the noise cancellation is too extreme (because of the bad drivers) and cancels everything when both are equal.
