Hold ATI 4xxx video card, how to update?

Hello,
I've a Compaq CQ41 and I've installed the proprietary drivers. Therefore I added [catalyst-1234] and [xorg111] to my pacman.conf .
Every time I want to update it comes out the problems to ignore some package. I use --ignoregroup xorg --ignore xorg-server-common, am I doing right or perhaps am I excluding to many packages?

[xorg111] isn't needed anymore; you can drop it and use xorg-server from [extra].

To answer your specific question, you'd need to declare [xorg111] before/above [extra] in pacman.conf so that [extra] packages don't take precedence and then you get conflicts and whatnot.

Comment out or delete [xorg111], as foutelis said... catalyst's are now running on xorg in [extra]. So pacman -Syu to replace your xorg. Then update the catalyst pkg from aur with PKGBUILD, yaourt or, whatev. You should be good to go. On a side note... If you havent Syu in a while, I would suggest trying to update xorg, then updating catalyst, remove old modules folder from /lib if its still there, before -Syu to avoid the /lib issues with glibc.

So do you think that this package should suffice and remove the repositories above mentioned?
My experiments were successful just follow the wiki, so I didn't pose further question upto the first update.

Sorry to take so long to get back. I have the aur pkg and the catalyst repo active. Nothing else, and no problems.

I also I took some time.
My result seems that the X server starts but it remains black without any input to leave, but holding the power switch.
Looking into the log I didn't find relevant errors, I can't see what would stop to load the personal data, including the root one.

Re: Hold ATI 4xxx video card, how to update?

Looking back at your original post i see you had [catalyst-1234] repo in pacman.conf.

I just looked at the wiki and there has been some changes since I've last needed to look at it. I see that repo your using listed with a warning. Not sure if its preemptive or what. Because I'm still using;

[catalyst]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch

I'm not having any problems other than the "drag and drop-crashes xcompmgr" issue. Im using catalyst-total-hd234k 12.6-4, with fglrx listed in the modules section of rc.conf. Here is the relevant output of lspci

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650]

This setup is currently working fine on 2 Sony Vaio  VGN-FW460J laptops. I emphasize currently! hmm

Re: Hold ATI 4xxx video card, how to update?

In a rush I put back the stock xf86-video-ati 1:6.14.6-1. I don't fill much difference. Mostly my son likes to play spiral-knights and I tought it's a performance hungry thing, then I decided for the proprietary driver.
As you're telling me, I suppose that normal catalyst repository would work also form old card like my son laptop. I just remember that I got to choose differently due by some problem.
I rethink all issues and report here what will work on that laptop.

BTW thanks for your support wink
