Is this being tracked upstream?

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

I thought i was not affected by this and i am on a 3.4 kernel since it was released but today (some minutes earlier) i had the kernel panic with messages similar to the photos on the previous page.

The only packages that are  related to linux that i installed are linux-api-headers yesterday and util linux (from the pacman.log)

[2012-07-07 10:37] upgraded linux-api-headers (3.3.8-1 -> 3.4.4-1)
[2012-07-07 10:37] upgraded util-linux (2.21.2-1 -> 2.21.2-3)

I also see this in my logs, don't know if it is related.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

During booting, just before the login-prompt is supposed to appear, since upgrading to a 3.4 kernel, I am also experiencing the random kernel panics on a Thinkpad x200.

Downgrading to 3.3.4 made the panics go away.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

Same issues on desktop motherboard with i5 Sandy Bridge. After upgrading to kernel 3.4.x system restarts with kernel panic. Running as a server without X. System run without problem with 3.3.8 kernel. According to various information on the internet it looks like the problem in the combination of kernel 3.4 and Intel Sandy Bridge.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

On my Lenovo Thinkpad X220 a update of BIOS and embedded controler engine helped solve the boot problems I had.
Unfortunatley I have to pull this back. It worked but somehow after some restarts the problem reappeared.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

On my Lenovo Thinkpad X200 updating the BIOS did NOT solve the issue of random kernel panics during boot using 3.4.x-kernels.
Any ideas?

In my case the panics seem to be triggered by using wifi (RT3060). Switching wifi off and using ethernet appears to be stable,

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

I'm using 3.4.4-2-lqx #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT (Liquorix kernel) x86_64 Arch and everything's fine so far - I touch wood...
From the picture @snoxu posts seems there's an IRQ problem so I suggest you guys try adding irqpoll to your kernel line at boot and see if that's any useful...
Just my 2cents, hope that helps.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

In my case the IRQ "problem" probably comes from:

00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 04) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
	Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 2040
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
	Memory at f7f38000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: ehci_hcd

05:00.0 USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 04) (prog-if 30 [XHCI])
	Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 2040
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
	Memory at f7c00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd

However the kernel only crashed once and since then the system seems to be working fine. How often do you get panics??

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

Disabeling wireless with the rfkill switch before booting seems to "fix" it for me. Irqpoll in the kernel commandline doesen't have any effect.
Relevant parts are

PCI

Subsystem: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 AGN
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi

I tried 3.4.4-2 3.4.4-3 3.4.5-1 3.4.6-1 and all have this issue. I had to downgrade kernel to 3.3.7-1 now

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

There are some issues with udev auto module loading in combination with kernel 3.4
I'm not sure what's the cause but I just blacklist the wireless driver (which causes my problems) and modprobe it in /etc/rc.local. No more kernel panics sine then.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

In my case panics were related to automatic CPU scaling (kernel 3.4 loads the appropriate modules automatically and uses the default governor - ondemand in my case). Disabling the SpeedStep in BIOS did the trick.

If you disable SpeedStep in BIOS, does this not increase your power consumption?

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

I don't get how jjub can disable Speedstep (I belief it's called P-States in my case) in the BIOS and still get cpu freq scaling?

Shouldn't it run full throttle?

That would be a no go for me as my laptop's i7 just runs hotter needlessly. Doesn't sound like a good fix if it actually works.

Furthermore I think a few different issues are getting thrown around in the same pot.

I tried running Arch with the intel wifi module blacklisted and still got a random panic. I have yet to find a real fix besides downgrading to 3.3.8 kernel.

My 2 cents

Well, I don't, but in my case panics occured on desktop, so I don't really care about scaling that much as I would as a laptop user.

But it's possible that my problems are not related to what you guys have (in that case I'm sorry for mixing things up) ...

Just updated to 3.4.7 and still getting kernel panics during the boot process. hmm

I've had good success with irqpoll and removing fastboot (a little hazy on what this actually does).

Hi azakus, I tried adding irqpoll as boot parameter in grub2, but with not success. Still getting kernel panics. Fastboot wasn't set as boot parameter, so I guess it's disabled.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

Kernel update to 3.4.9 brings no success. Disabling SpeedStep is no option on my laptop.

The lts kernel works but has higher power consumption and some issues with my wlan card which got fixed in 3.3.x ...
Is there any way to get the current kernel working without disabling speedstep?

@Azakus, can you explain what you actually did?

Edit
Solved it. I found out TLP 0.3.6 was causing these panics with its option to disable wireless devices on startup

DEVICES_TO_DISABLE_ON_STARTUP

I cleared this option and no more errors at boot time.

Re: Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

I'm the OP, it seems kernel 3.5 has solved the issue for me.

I will wait a little while more to make sure and then I'll mark this thread solved.
