Hello All.
After upgrading to KDE 4.9, I noticed:
1. My computer took some extra time to shutdown (only when running on AC
power). I ran a diff on a snapshot of my processes taken before starting
X, and after shutting it down, and found that kactivitymanagerd is the
problem-- it does not respond to SIGTERM, only SIGKILL. I guess it is not
a huge issue, but it annoys me nevertheless. Executing `pkill --signal 9
kactivityman` solves the issue, but I don't know where to put it... my
.xinitrc runs `exec startkde`, so I never get the chance there. Any
suggestions? Also, is anyone else having this problem? Is this worth a
bug report?
2. Some of the kwin effects seem less smooth. In particular, the "show
desktop grid" effect (most others seem fine). Did anyone else notice
this? Maybe I'm crazy, but I swear it was smoother in 4.8. If anyone can
confirm, did you find an answer? I tried to set the thumbnails to
"smooth" instead of "accurate", but it didn't seem to help. By the way,
this is on an X220 with intel graphics hardware (and the i915 kernel
module).
Has anyone successfully downgraded KDE from their cache before? I want to go
back to 4.8, but I'm scared of creating a much larger disaster.
Thanks in advance.
***Update***
Running my power-saving script fixes the first issue with kactivitymanagerd
(which is why it only happened on AC). I get the feeling this will be
something obscure, so it is probably best to not waste your time
investigating. But if you do run into this, I'm happy to share my script,

Everything fine here, but "show desktop grid" is less smooth...
You may fall into a problem with dependencies if you install kde 4.8 from cache. Can you find server out of sync, with kde 4.8 and other...only the idea, I do not know if there is something like...
I do not speak English, but I understand...

I've noticed that kwin crashes when activating the desktop cube with ctl+f11. Happens every time and with all 3 major graphics drivers (not the propriestary ones).

I personally suffer from problem where closing almost any KDE applications causes segfaults. It happens always with Dolphin and at shutdown for various different services. Anyone else having such issue and should I maybe start new thread for it?

Not here, with radeon driver and kernel 3.5.
Excuse my poor English.

Ok, upon further research, the kwin crash when exiting desktop cube only happens if "Display desktop name" is un-checked in the cube settings dialog. It's been reported. Strangely enough, I found this out on the Kubuntu forums!

If you haven't done it already I suggest visiting bugs.kde.org and make upstream hear about those issues (comment, vote and/or fill new reports if it's not configuration fault).
For instance desktop cube crash is known and reported bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304340
PS Lead developer of kwin is suggesting porting desktop grid to qml, schedule for kde 4.10: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=295775 so they probably knows that desktop grid is a hog at the moment. Go and vote!
Seriously, passive posting here on the forum won't change anything ![]()

Thanks for the replies, all : )

I tried out dolphin and konqueror just now, and had no issues. I don't use
them very often, but I've never seen them crash before.
@masteryod: Indeed. But before filing bug reports, I like to check with the
friendly Arch community to get a little feedback and make sure that, as you
mentioned, it isn't my own fault for having some messed up configuration.
This is a valid use of the forum, right?

I'm not sure what to think of the QML re-write: that sounds like a
re-organization / feature addition, but I don't know if it acknowledges the
4.8 --> 4.9 performance regression that we've observed. I think will file a
report as soon as I get the chance.
Also, I have one update: I think the first problem I mentioned
(kactivitymanagerd refusing to die) might be somewhat me-specific, so don't
look too hard for a solution. The reason it only happens when I am on AC is
that in this case my power-saving script is *not* run. If I run the powersave
script, kactivitymanagerd will exit at the right time o_O No clue why the
script would fix this. There's nothing exotic in the script, and I still
contend this is a bug, but I'm not sure it would be worth your time to
investigate.
Thanks again, everyone.

Absolutely, I do the same ![]()

Same here! What have you done to resolve this?
