Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Hello~

I am attempting to get my motherboard (DZ77GA-70K) to boot linux through uefi. I have tried the archlinux kernel but it hangs with no output, even with debug and earlyprintk=vga on. I have also tried compiling the latest kernel to no avail.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or know how I can diagnose whether I am doing something incorrectly, or the problem is with my uefi firmware (version 0049) or the kernel?

Thanks :D

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Is it a problem of the kernel or the bootloader?
Which kernel are you currently running? 3.6-rc1?

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Thats what I'm asking smile I don't know if it is a problem with the kernel or the boot loader... or maybe something else.

I have tried the archlinux kernel 3.4.7 and yes the latest 3.6-rc1 source. I have also tried using elilo to boot it, but that fails the same way.

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

What do you mean with 'no output'? and are you sure that it really hangs? Try booting with "nomodeset".
I ask, because I'm also having troubles getting my uefi system up and running properly.
See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146840

For me, it just wasn't putting anything on the screen when running with kms.
I've also tried to upgrade to 3.6, but couldn't get it to boot.
I'm just using efistub , so no bootloader like grub2 oder elilo and so on...

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Well, I'm not an expert at debugging kernels :) but when I boot a 3.4 or 3.6 kernel it will print out to the screen while in the "boot services" mode of uefi, but nothing after that. I will attempt nomodeset when I get back.

I'm also only using efistub. Have you tried booting in efi mode with elilo? That didn't work for me either.

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

I haven't tried using elilo or grub2, becaue thanks to uefi, I no longer need them (efistub).
I just use rEFInd,(I also run ms-win on my machine) to toggle between OSes, which works fine, just that kms seems to be broken in my case at least.I don't know if this is particular to booting in uefi modev though, could just be my setup.

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

:( nomodeset didn't work. I also tried a version of the kernel that has some new mode-setting code in it: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTE2Mzc but that didn't work either. Maybe it could work for you?

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Sorry to hear, it was just a hunch that our problems may be related.
I saw this today, could be it in my case...

UPDATE:
You should try -rc3.
I've successfully compiled it, and now I can get X up using the radeon module. I now however get no console output...so I have to login and startx 'blind' for now,. smile
So at least in my case kms seems to be working (except the conosole part) with uefi now.

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Tried rc3 but no luck sad Glad you have a semi-working version though

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Question: I'm going to get a mac from work, and I'd like to install Arch Linux next to it. Going to be a Mac book pro, question is, is it possible?

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Edit: After talking to intel support there is a long winded process to get your bios back

Just a quick FYI for everyone, do not install the latest bios firmware (0053) for a dz77ga-70k motherboard. It will brick it.

Re: Help with booting the kernel through uefi

Intel seems to have serious problems with its motherboards and linux support at the moment. From dodgy firmware (misrouted irqs) for my mobo to linux UEFI which seems to be a problem with many motherboards.

And there isn't probably any chance they'll fix this since "They don't support Linux on this motherboard" hmm

Such a shame for an otherwise pretty FOSS friendly company.
