Suggestions for Next Install Media

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone for their great work with the monthly install media.  I think the idea of the monthly install media is a great idea.  The addition of the Installation Guide at /root/install.txt to media 2012.08.04 was helpful.

As the Installation Guide refers to other documents, I would like to suggest the inclusion of:
  - the Partitioning page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning)
  - the LVM page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lvm)
  - the dm-crypt with LUKS page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt_with_LUKS)
  - the RAID page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RAID)
  - the File Systems page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ile_system)
  - the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface)
  - the Configuring Network page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ng_network)
  - the Wireless Setup page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup)
  - the netcfg page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg)
  - the GRUB2 page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2)
  - the Syslinux page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Syslinux)
  - the fstab page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab)
  - the Change Root page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot)
  - the Locale page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Locale}
  - the mkinitcpio page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio)

Considering that the Beginner's Guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide) seems to include enough information for even an Arch Linux newbie such as myself to install, its inclusion would make a great deal of sense as well.

A small message at the login prompt describing where the documentation can be found and how to read it would be useful for really inexperienced users, or provide a friendly reminder to more experienced users.

While the addition of all this documentation may seem redundant to some, there are those of us who don't have access to a printer and only have access to one computer.  Having the documentation readily at hand would simplify things greatly for some people who would like to join the Arch Linux community.

Just my $0.02,
  pntfive

Re: Suggestions for Next Install Media

Sounds like a great idea. I'd also suggest the addition of:
- the GPT page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GPT
- the MBR page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Master_Boot_Record
I haven't used the latter but the former is quite useful as it sort of points to lots of relevant-to-GPT bits of the documentation you suggest and gives a nice overview. Probably not essential but nice to have (and especially easy to include if the bookmark method is chosen).

Including the Beginners' Guide really strikes me as something which might make a big difference and it is, after all, what we tell everyone they should (have) follow(ed)!

Re: Suggestions for Next Install Media

IMO, the only documentation included on the install media should be on how to set up your internet connection.

Then you can open up tty2 (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and run:

# elinks wiki.archlinux.org

Also, this topic should probably be in the "Arch Discussion" category.

I agree. The wiki (including the Beginners' Guide) is a moving target at any time, but especially now.

Right. You can even see all included packages in the file arch.iso/arch/pkglist.{i686,x86_64}.txt
Edit: Or in the git repository: http://projects.archlinux.org/archiso.g … kages.i686

How? At least, on the live media I created, I can't read these files - file says they are "data" and less/cat certainly looks that way. I figure I must obviously be missing something but it isn't usually hard to read what looks from the extension to be a plain text file!

Don't know if this is what I found exactly in the end but something similar (though probably not the i686 one).

While I agree that the wiki would be a moving target, the same could be said of the software itself.  The monthly media releases are a "snapshot" of some of the software.  Why not include a similar "snapshot" of the documentation taken at the same time?

Documentation lags behind implementation.

Re: Suggestions for Next Install Media

That's right... When then ISO image is made public, the documentation would only be relevant, to some degree, only to the previous media.
