Re: im new please help me

I think Arch is easy to install - based on your questions, you might not. You will need to manually configure the system after installation. No serial number is required, and I and many others here dual-boot with Windows without any problems - after editing the relevant config files, of course.

It's up to you in the end - I'd recommend you give it a try.  If it doesn't suit you, there are plenty of other distros out there.

No... based on your questions, I don't think Arch is the distro you are looking for.

Re: im new please help me

You need to edit the critical configuration files to suit your hardware and the intended use of your system. Have a look through the wiki, and you'll get the idea.

Re: im new please help me

Arch like most linux distributions is under the GPL licence, so no serial number is needed.

Re: im new please help me

If you mean editing config files to install, yeah you'll have to do that. For example, if you want to dual boot with windows, you will have to add the following to your menu.lst config file when installing:

title Windows
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

If that scares you at all, I would recommend using a different distro to "get your feet wet", and then come back to Arch with the necessary experience. Unless of course you want to learn, then by all means give Arch a try. The people in here will be happy to help you out if you have trouble. big_smile

Re: im new please help me

I suggest you should start with Ubuntu & Kubuntu ... or other 'easy' distros are SuSE, Mandriva, Fedora.

The above distros are easy to install and should find all your hardware and be easy to configure.

Don't forget your friendly ArchLinux forum help and come and try Arch in 6 months or so.

Re: im new please help me

Good luck with madriva!

It's a pretty good one to get started with and should allow you to have linux AND windows xp fairly easily.

Once you've got the hang of mandrake, and linux, then maybe you should check out archlinux in 6 months - 1 year. I depends on how comfortable you feel with linux.

Good luck!

Re: im new please help me

The paid-for version has even more "features", or as we like to call them around here, bloat, cruft, and clutter. They made a commitment that they would always provide a free version under the GPL - just google for Mandriva iso, and take your pick.
