I love FVWM.

It´s really fun to configure a useable config.

Yup, fvwm is indeed one of the greatest things about linux. For example, compare my top with other wm/de's:

Yes, it's a bit of a pain to make a config, but it's much easier to work off of other people's config files, the documentation/forums are extremely helpful, and the config actually starts to make sense after a bit Most people took the time to learn Arch, which takes a time investment compared to other distros, and fvwm is its perfect wm counterpart. Fast, light, and configurable.

Doesn't it get irritating when you want to change your theme though? I mean, it probably takes hours of tweaking and testing to make it "just right", then you decide you want something else and you have to do it all over... I just wouldn't be able to do that.

If you split the config into multiple files it is actually very easy to change the theme. And by using scripts, you can just keep your old partial config files in directories, and change only the colorset with one click. Also if you like someones windowdecoration for example, you can just copy that into the windowdecoration theme file, and use that in your one theme.

Oh, man... sometimes it takes a little longer than a few hours. After 6 years of tweaking, I'm finally getting fvwm to look the way it should be.

Well, my colorsets need a little adjustment though... and my window decorations are just passé...

Maybe at first it might take a few days worth of man reading and file editing to get things jusft right, but when you get to know the beast its butter from then on. Like pressh said, just keep your shwag neat and in seperate files.

In middle of this month (18th) I am planning to build user configuration packages for ArchWD. The purpose is to have set of samples of different packages (pager, menu, decoration, wallpaper, etc.) with nice styles and settings. At the same time test the practical side of downloading, upgrading and the system in general.

Please, send me your FVWM configs (tarball) as they are at the moment. I will split them into daemons, layouts and modules, and assign a package name e.g. legoutmenu-0.1.wm.tar.gz. The owner can then maintain and upgrade if liked.

Ok, so I found this thread yesterday and decided to give Fvwm another try. Here's what I got so far:

I don't like the colors and window decorations much and will change that soon (if I don't switch back to Openbox ). The Pager is embedded in FvwmButtons so that I can slide it out of the screen and back in. One thing I'm missing is a nice but simple system monitor to watch Network- and CPU-activity, maybe someone has any recommendations? I used conky for that with Openbox but would like to try out something new...

What about xosview? i don´t use it, but i´ve seen many fvwm-screens with swallowed xosview.

There's also adesklet-systemmonitor in AUR.

EDIT: There's also dockapps. There's some in extra and some in AUR.

I have used it once, but it's quite tricky to get the colors to your liking. Once it is up and working it does its job nicely.
