Weird File exists that I can't fix and need guidance. [solved]

Hi, I did a system upgrade on a system I hadn't done since 6/17 I got a file exists error for gclib, I checked for the file in the location that it specified and it wasn't there. So I tried to force glibc on it's own. I lost all cli commands like ls etc. Pacman was not there either. I did back up prior as it was a big update. I have restored but I don't have any idea how to fix this. It did have me update pacman first, was that possibly a mistake? I remember having to skip that first at some time in the past and do it after the upgrade.

thanks for any help you may provide,

I have and I have already fixed this problem on other occasions, this does not seem to be the same and I was hoping someone had additional insight into this particular situation.

thanks

There is additional insight, in the news feed, in a wiki page dedicated to this issue, and in countless long threads where people have screwed this up.  They all give the resounding warning to not force the update ... often in bold or highlighted print.  Since you did that, it is clear you have not read any of those.

One it does mention forcing it in the wiki if you can't solve the file issue, but to force the package alone not the system. Further I backed up and restored so I am back to where I started. That is why I posted, If I had destroyed my system, I might think I would be re-installing it right now.

thanks

I just searched that wiki page.  There are two instances of the word force, both in a big red box saying not to use it.

But hey, do what you want.

Re: Weird File exists that I can't fix and need guidance. [solved]

I have already backed out the force problem by restoring from back up, so that is a moot issue. I need right now to find out what when it states there is a file conflict that the file is not in the location that pacman states.

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
glibc: /lib exists in filesystem

I am reading the wiki and I can't find the file it mentions, it states No such file or directory.

and as far as what you stated this is on the pacman page.

Every installed package provides /var/lib/pacman/local/$package-$version/files file that contains metadata about this package. If this file gets corrupted - is empty or missing - it results in "file exists in filesystem" errors when trying to update the package. Such an error usually concerns only one package and instead of manually renaming and later removing all the files that belong to the package in question, you can run pacman -S --force $package to force pacman to overwrite these files.
Do not run pacman -Syu --force.

It states that you can try to force the package but do not try and force it with a system upgrade command, only the package it self

Re: Weird File exists that I can't fix and need guidance. [solved]

Thank you although it hasn't worked it gives me something to work with. I am going to attempt the move by hand as pacman isn't discovering this descrepency. I noticed also that lib64 is now a link and it wasn't then either. I checked one of my other installs that is updated regularly. I remember when this happened and it went very smooth. Oh well. I will see if I can work this out and post the results.

thanks for your help.

Re: Weird File exists that I can't fix and need guidance. [solved]

OK we finally got it, the information that worked was from SanskritFritz above, notably though the download on that page is coming down corrupted, fortunately I went to my other arch install and grabbed the file from the cache and it worked, so thanks everyone. Should I report that file or something?
