tv-card

Hello!
I've been trying to get my tv-card up and running for ages! I have still not succeded... :-( I would really like to get this to work so I wouldn't have to use windows all the time. I really like arch and would like to use it as my regular OS!

Anyway, I have a pinnacle pctv stereo card using the saa7134 driver. Card number is 26 (found it in a list). I live in Sweden meaning I have a PAL system. Then what to do? I've tried most of the tv programs I could find but still no success... Please help me!!!

Re: tv-card

Make sure you also load the correct tuner (for PAL).
You can select the tuner when load the saa7134 module anyway:

modprobe saa7134 tuner=[1..or try some number]

Look at /var/log/messages after you load the module.
Try also manually select the card type:

modprobe saa7134 card=26

Re: tv-card

what message does tvtime-scanner give you?

It says that no channels found or something like that. (Don't remember exactly now, am in windows)

Okay, I'll try to load the module with card and tuner options... But is there a way to find out which tuner type I have? I've searched for it everywhere but I can't seem to find it! :-/ If not, how many numbers should I continue testing? hehe like 1-10 or is that too much/little?

Re: tv-card

I did some try and error and with this:

modprobe saa7134 tuner=33

And using the card=26 gives the same result with dmesg:

Linux video capture interface: v1.00

saa7134[0]: registered device video0 [v4l2]
saa7134[0]: registered device vbi0
saa7134[0]/audio: audio carrier scan failed, using 5.500 MHz [default]

Then I edit my ~/.tvtime/stations.xml and enter a channel in the list: 210.187 (TV3 in Sweden). I start up tvtime and go through all the finetuning spectrum, I get no image... I mean, if the dmesg says tuner OK and card detected, that can't be the problem, right? I'm doing this as root, so permissions can't be the problem, right? And we use PAL in sweden and my tvtime is configured for PAL (but are there more PAL:s I have to try out?)... I have even less ideas what to do now...

Re: tv-card

hmmm. I have a video capture card, but I've never really tried to watch different tv channels through it. I use the rca in with a vcr and it works fine like that. Are you using it with coaxial cable plugged in? You could try using rca cables and something like a vcr or dvd player. I don't know if that will make a difference, but it might be worth a try?

Re: tv-card

I'm using the computer as a tv/vcr setup because I don't have a tv or vcr! so I can't try that...

And now after some fiddeling arround in linux with the tv-card I can't even get it to work in windows! I mean, how is this possible? I look at tv in windows, go to linux and try to set it up, back to windows and nothing works!? What's that all about?

Well, I've been trying to get this shit to work for ages now, I'm thinking of getting a new card!

Is Compro VideoMate DVB-T300 a good choise? (http://www.comprousa.com/New/en/product/vmt300.html)

And is it as hard to get this card working under linux? Or is this quest even possible!?

Re: tv-card

That is pretty weird. It sounds like there is something wrong with your card for both linux and windows to have problems with it. I have never used the compro card before. I have a AverMedia pci card that is based on the saa 7134 driver as well and it was easy to setup. It only has a s-video and rca in though, so it probably wouldn't suit your purposes.

Re: tv-card

But the weird thing is that I didn't have any problems with it in windows before I tried to get it working in linux yesterday! Well, of course, it took me like two hours to get it working in windows first when I had bought it, but not since then...

Re: tv-card

found this on http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/MythTV:

Compro VideoMate DVB-T300
Chipset: Philips SAA 7134
Support: Requires Kernel 2.6.12 or greater and the latest CVS from video4linux and linux-dvb
Installation:

    * Grab the CVS for video4Linux and linux-dvb, instructions can be found at LinuxTV.org (http://www.linuxtv.org)
    * Goto the video4linux directory and run scripts/merge-trees.sh
    * Edit the Make.config file and make sure saa7134-dvb = n is changed to saa7134-dvb = m (builds the dvb part as a module)
    * Run make && make install
    * Then modprobe saa7134 oss=1 card=70
    * Then modprobe saa7134-dvb and you should be good to go.
    * Remote Control: I've added support for the remote control as well. It uses the linux input layer and so you'll need to configure LIRC accordingly. This change will be checked into the CVS by the time you read this

Does the dependance on the cvs of v4l mean I have to recompile the whole kernel?
