fastest way to creat an screenshot

Hello,

i'm trying to write an c program to analyze the current content of my screen (average color, etc).
can someone tell me which is the fastest way to get an screenshot with the lowest cpu usage?
i need about 25fps
does somebody have an idea what is the best solution for this?
