Using computer as fax

I want to use an old Compaq Presario CQ60-118el as fax machine.

The computer has a phone socket, but I cannot find a way to understand if the system do detect the modem inside.
I am afraid it is one of the feared conexant winmodems, how can I detect if the modem works or its model?

It's probably attached to your sound card. Try a search for '<your sound card (from lspci)> modem'.
