My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

Hi.. I'm running Archlinux on a HP Pavilion dv6 6154nr. Since I'd installed on it, it consumes around 25-30W and battery last like 1 hour, or and 1 hour and a half, when in Windows battery last like 2 hours or 3. CPU is heat like 64⁰C and im just running chromium with 5 tabs, without flash, and a terminal on Xmonad.

I have done every tutorial on archwiki, i have installed and configurated cpufrequtils, laptopmode, pm-utils, and it stills heating a lot.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

When the machine is just sitting there, what is the output of cpufreq-info  ??
Look around in /sys/backlight and look at the content of the files in the directories there.  What is the display brightness vs the max brightness?

ewaller@odin:~ 1004 %cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
0
ewaller@odin:~ 1005 %cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
10
ewaller@odin:~ 1006 %

That laptop is 50 km away, with the lid closed.  I am talking to it over an ssh link -- hence, no back light wink

You are running about 12C more than my machine

ewaller@odin:~[1] 1007 %cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
52000
ewaller@odin:~ 1008 %

Hi, thanks for reply.

This is what i have on that files.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

That all looks pretty good hmm  Certainly nothing obvious.

If were just hot, I would be checking the cooling system, but you say the battery life is low as well -- blowing that theory.

I think the next thing to look at is the output of powertop.  See if you can see what is using energy at high rates.  You can also play with the "tunables" tab to see if there is any effect

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

I've already play with tunables on powertop but nothing changes. It stills consumes around 25W when it should consume 10-16W..
hp-wmi is always at 100% and i dont know what that is.

Thanks for helping.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

what's the state of the discrete card? it seem to be powered on, if so poweroff the unused card and see the output of powertop (temperature and power should go down), maybe also check the cooling, having those temperature when nearly in idle seem a little bit strange

Its disabled.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

I'm having a similar problem with a Dell Vostro 3460, maybe we can find a solution that help both of us.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

the high power consumption is always present or only when you recover from suspend/hibernate? i'm asking this because, at least for me, when i recover from suspend/hibernate even if vgaswitcheroo say that the discrete card is off in reality it's powered.
For me a way to know if the discrete card is powered is to read the sensors output (maybe not the best way, but it function)

Discrete card ON

radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +43.5°C

Discrete card OFF

radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: -128.0°C

Yes, high power consumption is always present.

Re: My laptop is consuming all battery and heating to much

If you're using an APU or dual AMD graphics card setup:

I had a similar issue. Swapped from the open source driver (radeon) to the catalyst driver (fglrx?) and then used CCC (Catalyst Control Center) to turn off the discrete card and enable the integrated card battery mode.

My laptop which used to last 1hr w/ stock and 2/hrs with radeon now lasts upwards of 4hrs and the brightness works. Downside is that the catalyst driver doesn't give you temperature sensor output.
