Intel 2200BG Wifi intermittent problems - bug?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an Intel 2200BG wifi card.

I was running Ubuntu on my laptop until I recently switched it over to Arch. I had(ve) an intermittent problem with the wifi drivers (ipw2200).

I filed an ubuntu bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1019960 where I tested the latest upstream kernel (3.5.0 at the time). Problem persisted. Installing Arch on laptop and problem is still here.

The wifi will connect fine, but then after a small period of time the wifi drops and needs to be reconnected.

After testing upstream kernel I wasn't surprised to find Arch suffering same issue - has anyone else had this issue and have any workarounds?

I have the same wireless card and I don't have any problems with it.
The machine is an IBM Thinkpad R50e. Wifi works fine, with the latest kernel ( and maybe the five latest kernels).

I am having the same issue (with the same card) on an IBM ThinkPad X40.

Which connection method are you using? I am with Wicd. I will try to connect manually and with NetworkManeger to see what happens.

I know when I went from one linux kernel and tried to upgrade to another, it didn't like that card as much.
Is it holding a strong signal?

Re: Intel 2200BG Wifi intermittent problems - bug?

Same card, same problem. (I'm on a thinkpad X31). It's been trouble for quite a while, actually. I'm || this close to getting a new wifi card, but I guess I've got a lot of patience for hitting refresh every time it goes down.

I've dried disabling wifi power management to no avail.

No errors are put off when the signal goes down (as far as I can tell), it just loses connection as though I had a poor signal (I'm a few feet from my router).

Quite interestingly, the problem exists on Windows as well. (see here). The issue appears to be with the Intel driver, although I'm not sure about the relationship between the Windows and kernel drivers.

Hi there. I also have the same problem (on a dell D410).
I am also not far from the router, but I was thinking it could come from interferences with other wifi (I can detect more than 30 other wifis!)

Re: Intel 2200BG Wifi intermittent problems - bug?

I think I've figured it out!!!!

I've been plagued by this problem for a while now, and I can't believe the answer was so simple. The card is simply weak.

Increasing the broadcast volume of my router to 17dBm and switching to channel 11 seems to have taken care of the intermittent issues! I haven't lost the signal in a number of days.

Hope you all check back and give it a shot (and have suitable routers).

Re: Intel 2200BG Wifi intermittent problems - bug?

Hello, I have a T42 with ipw2200 and it's working fine. Also, I compiled the injection drivers and works great. This card is little weak but I will use near to my router and it works smile

Maybe there are diferences between boards of the same model. Maybe, if you compile the drivers and then put the module, you will get better response. Regards!

Re: Intel 2200BG Wifi intermittent problems - bug?

Yeah, maybe is a weak card: since I put my router in the same room where I use this laptop, the connection never dropped again.

Also, try to use a static IP, it will reconnect faster.
