Any Sort of Drivers for NVidia Card Result In Black Screen at boot

Hey, I have been trying to install Arch on my desktop that has an NVidia Geforce 550Ti, but when I try to install the drivers either the nvidia or the open source Nouveau, it results in a black screen at boot.  If any more information is needed please ask, I am running 64-bit Arch installed from the latest installation disk.

You did "nvidia-xconfig" after proprietary driver installation?

Is that necessary even if I haven't set up X yet?  I have X installed but haven't set anything up yet.  It doesn't start on boot.

edit: I had to do a full reinstall because I am organizing things, and I tried using nvidia-xconfig and I still get a black screen at boot
