Bad Wireless connection on arch, but not on Windows?

Hey,

I have arch on both my desktop and my new laptop and have been encontering the same problem on both. To start both machines x86_64 versions of Arch Linux running KDE4 with networkmanager and accompanying KDE applet.

The issue I am having is trying to connect to my houses wifi as  am about 20 metres away from my wireless access point. Networkmanager cannot seem to connect to the network and stops at "Setting Network Address". I can connect to the access point fine on a windows machine/s from the exact same place and only works on arch if I go into the same room as the wifi access point. I have also tried connecting with wicd and had similar results..

My wireless card is an Atheros AR9485 , is there something i've overlooked here/can anyone suggest a way to get a better connection?

Also here is the output of the networkmanager log in daemon.log during the minute I was trying to connect:

Moderator comment:  doctorzeus:  Please use BBCode code tags when pasting files and program output.  Your readers will appreciate it.
There is also a handy link under post boxes in the forums.  I will go ahead and fix your first post.  You can edit it to see how I do it.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply smile ..

This is the results of "iwscan" run as root from 20 metres away(please be aware that my network's ssid is hidden, but making the network discoverable makes no difference to being able to connect):

Re: Bad Wireless connection on arch, but not on Windows?

The good news is that the hardware looks to be working smile
Is your AP amongst those listed?  On my system iwlist shows hidden networks, but that may be a function of the underlying driver for your hardware.
Of those APs, they are all open, with the exception of BTHub3-C867.  What happens if you turn of Networkmanager and Wicd and try to connect to (associate with) one of the non-encrypted ones using just iwconfig?

Re: Bad Wireless connection on arch, but not on Windows?

Well see if " cat /sys/module/ath9k/parameters/btcoex_enable " = 0, there are few issues with this enabled "aka = 1", Ohter than that device seems to work as "ewaller" state, so test a bit, also double check AP config just to be sure wink

Thanks for the reply, however it appears to be set to 0..

Ok interesting discovery I made which may help, I found I can go into a room where the hub is on the other side of the wall and I am able to connect, I can then walk back from there and use the internet in the other rooms fine no problem! It just seems to have issues getting the network address with the dhcp server while i'm in certain parts of my house??

Here is the output of "iwlist scan" for my access point when connected from the area I was having issues:

'WoodLyn' is about 10 meters away from where I sit though two load bearing plaster walls in a wood framed house.  It shows a signal strength of -47 dBm.
"Merlin" comes from the house across the street from where I am sitting.  I estimate that it is at least 30 meters from here through two exterior walls. It has a strength of -82 dBm
All the others are from surrounding surrounding single family homes on moderate lots.

Look at your level -87 dBm.  That is 5 dB down from what a see from my neighbors home across the street (About 1/3 the power).   Granted, we do not have the same hardware, and they are probably not the best devices for measuring power but...

The -47 dBm in my home  vs the -86 dBm you see represent a difference of -39 dB.  That is  126/1000000 the power.

Something is not right here.  What is the construction of your home? Can you get into the router to see what it thinks of the signal levels?  Have you checked your antennae?
