I own hp 4710s for about 2 years and I never had this problem before.
I am really puzzled and I don't know how to debug this. The problem is that some keys randomly stop responding while others still work well. Mostly it happened when using backspace but it happened with some character keys too. This behavior lasts about 2-3 seconds and then the problem is gone.
Everything on my system is updated, I am using awesome wm from the official repos, some keys are mapped trough xmodmap and using xkbevd to change layouts. The problem is not application specific, it happened with urxvrt, chromium and evince.

This behaviour was a result of a bad flat cable connection. marking as solved.
