Force Anti Aliasing 16x in doom3

I have a Geforce 7800GTX on an fx-55.. Anti aliasing 16x works in windows but *seems* to be doing a max of 4x in Linux.(I'm not sure how to verify what it actually is).

# __GL_FSAA_MODE=7 glxgears

This works fine in anti aliasing at 16x, but doom3 doesnt seem to be doing it even when i save settings and restart the game...I've also moved the slider in nvidia-settings to 16x, but the game doesn't seem to obey this..I read somewhere that this can be done:

$ set __GL_FSAA_MODE=7

but running glxgears in the same console after entering that command proves that no changes in anti aliasing have been made.. Are NVIDIA drivers (7676) limiting the anti aliasing? Is anyone able to run doom3 at 16x? Note that I am NOT running an SLI setup. Thanks for your time.

Have you tried using nvidia-settings?
