Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

Hello to all.

I'm having similar problems like this one, here using a Dell Vostro 3460, maybe is just some non-windows OS unfriendly hardware. Battery last like 5 or 6 hours on Windows, and just like 2 or 2 and a half on Arch. Will remove battery until there is a solution, and use the laptop only on my workplace.

I have to admit that, I don't know how to disable the discrete video card, I just blacklisted nouveau.

LCD is not hot, there is just constant flow of heat by the ventilation gap (maybe the CPU dissipator?) brightness settings are ok. On windows that heat flow sometimes just stops.

Any help is very appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

I had a pretty similar experience with an old Dell XPS laptop, turned out to be faulty hardware/super-Linux-unfriendly hardware. I personally can't seem to find anything wrong with your config files, but have you considered fiddling around with your kernel, especially to disable your discrete GPU? You might even be able to solve some of your other issues by tweaking a new kernel around. But if you have already done this then I am at a loss for you =/

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

Has this always happened ever since you installed arch?
If not, it might be linked to the rumored 3.5 power regression.

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

Thanks.

Have already blacklisted nouveau, I have to modprobe nouveau and then modprobe -r nouveau and then powertop shows this on the "Device stats" tab:

modprobe nouveau

100.0% PCI Device: NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GT 630M

modprobe -r nouveau

0.0% PCI Device: NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GT 630M

However heating continues.

Tried the arch iso 2012.08.04 which is kernel 3.4 , still heats a lot.

Any pointers on which kernel config parameters to focus?

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

Look at bumblebee for switching between discrete and integrated graphics card.
I also suggest not using laptop-mode-tools - it's slow, buggy and you never know what exactly it does. Consider using pm-utils or powerdown instead. They are harder to configure, but you have better control over what it does and what it does not.

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

@lahwaacz,
Could you point me to documentation regarding bugs/problems with laptop-mode tools? I'm using that right now and it has always worked pretty well but I'm currently seeing higher temperatures (~10C higher on average) and trying to figure out why.

My fan operates continually but not, I think, very aggressively. But it has always done that so I assume it is normal for this laptop. (Have no idea really but it doesn't seem out of the way - it is a laptop, after all...)

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

I have a Dell 3560, I recently posted some Fan Control tips in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148156

Is that any help?

I don't know anything about fan control, my laptop controls fan speed automatically, I can't even get current fan speed.

The main problem with laptop-mode-tools is that it's very huge, and the bigger the program is, the slower is the execution. Another problem is that it's connected to both battery and AC adapter ACPI events (see /etc/acpi/events/lm_{ac_adapter,battery}). On my laptop, those events are sent at the same time, resulting in running laptop-mode-tools twice. Most people once configure laptop-mode-tools to their liking and their hardware, so I think there is no need for such an extensive software like laptop-mode-tools, if something simpler does the same (or better) job.

Also laptop-mode-tools can conflict with pm-utils (which are installed on many systems as dependency for some packages):

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

But laptop-mode tools, unlike systemd, has at least some support in systemd, right?

I agree it can conflict - you have to disable some of the pm-utils functionality.

I guess I found it useful just to have a whole bunch of power-related settings in one place where I could work through them. Obviously that's not the best fit for everyone (especially if it disagrees with your hardware). It does seem to be more versatile than pm-utils, though.

Hopefully the need to have pm-utils installed as a dependency will go away soon, with the switch to systemd.

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

@cfr, I read somewhere (though I cannot find it now), that an x220 user saw significantly lower sensor readings when setting the i915.enable_rc6=1 on the bootloader command line.  I know you do not have the same model, but I am pretty sure that the x121e uses integrated graphics, yeah?  No promises, but I know this is something that has been concerning you for some time, so I thought I would throw it out there.

pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.semaphores=1

is helpful - I already use this. I'm not actually worried per se but I would like to know why it is now higher and to save the difference if I can. (It still doesn't run as hot as my old Mac laptop which was sometimes burning hot to the touch.)

Re: Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

I had to resort to only using my Macbook on a desk or table.  If I had it on my lap, I would have to find a bunch of magazines or a book to put between my legs and machine.  Or else use it way to the left so that the heatsinks (which were toward the middle), were not on my lap.  It really rather sucked.

I'm curious, if you are experiencing a consistent 10C rise in heat, are you also experiencing a proportional loss in battery life?
