Kernel 3.5 ksoftirqd 99% on one CPU when booted on battery

Since the upgrade to Linux kernel 3.5 I have a constant ksoftirqd process blocking one CPU 99%.

I'm using a X220 Lenovo laptop.

Any ideas would be helpful.

I've found out that this only shows when I'm on battery when I boot.

With an update to the newest BIOS version and a reboot this normalized again.

Re: Kernel 3.5 ksoftirqd 99% on one CPU when booted on battery

Wasn't the BIOS update that solved it. It was the removal of tlp and tlp-rdw packages.
Even after a upgrade to the version 0.3.7.1 they still seem to be creating a IRQ deadlock.
Therefore if your CPU load goes up on a X220 with kernel 3.5.x, remove TLP for the time being.

Neither of these two things was the problem. Being on battery while booting is my latest assumption. Anybody out there experiencing the same?

Re: Kernel 3.5 ksoftirqd 99% on one CPU when booted on battery

one more detail:
Turning on USB autosuspend for the F5521gw device (WWAN) gets the kernel into burn mode. Perhaps this driver is not geared for powersaving.

One thing you can do:
blacklist cdc_wdm and block F5521gw device form being enabled -> you can't use 3G networks

I have the same problem on my Lenovo T430 since some days. I observed that sometimes after suspending/resuming the systems it is gone, but after the next suspend/resume the problem is back. What I changed within the last days (beside regular Arch upgrades) is that I replaced the DVD drive with an HDD within an Ultra Bay Adapter.

Ah, I checked /var/log/pacman.log and realized that the upgrade to Kernel 3.5 just happened on 2012-09-01. So that really seems to be the issue.

Edit:
I blacklisted the H5321 gw Mobile Broadband Device from USB suspend using TLP and the issue seems to be gone. Thanks wabi!
