Re: INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I've had this problem more than once myself.
Updating or installing the proper video card driver has always fixed it for me.

Currently triple booting Arch Linux, Sabayon 10, and Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch...

Re: INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I'm no expert at reading Xorg logs, but there are no (unexpected or problematic) warnings or errors in there.  Is that the whole thing though?  Was there more at the end that got chopped off?

Can you try booting to runlevel 3 and starting X from the ttty?

Also, to eliminate another possible cause, can you post your DAEMONS array (from rc.conf)?

Re: INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

i can startx normally and it starts like a charm. only the runlevel 5 autostart doesnt work.

daemons are nothing special, i cant post them coz i got the tablet not here, but at maximum 8 daemons and only the standard things...

Re: INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

which login manager are you using?
which desktop environment are you using?

Currently triple booting Arch Linux, Sabayon 10, and Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch...

Does starting lxdm manually work?

Re: INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I never had more than three or four daemons in rc.conf, so I don't know which 8 would be considered standard.

What I was curious about is whether there is a display manager in daemons.

I'd also suggest directing lxdm errors to a log rather than the bit bucket so you can see what is going wrong.  And for the time being, changing "respawn" to "once" could be useful.

wrong

right

x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/lxdm >& /dev/null

as moere suggested incorporate the right code. And also dont forget to disable the default xdm login manager in /etc/inittab

And uncomment the session=/usr/bin/startlxde in /etc/lxdm/lxdm.conf if using LXDE
or session=/usr/bin/startxfce4 if using XFCE.

I too, had the same issue, then I tried to follow your advice...until I noticed that lxdm was not installed even though xfce4 was! Installed lxdm and everything worked like a charm.
