XFCE Application Finder alternative

Hello all,

Does anyone know an alternative to XFCE Application Finder (xfce4-appfinder)? I'm trying to build a slim fluxbox setup on my laptop but I wanted something with the functionality of XFCE Appfinder but without the dependencies. I really like the "dynamic search/apropos" thing that XCFE Application Finder delivers.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Re: XFCE Application Finder alternative

The appfinder is not bad, but I prefer kupfer (in the AUR), since it remembers the most important applications and I only have to type 3 letters maximum to launch them, firefox is only one 'f' away.

Edit: If you miss something you can even write your own plugins in python.

progandy, I liked it, but how can I set it close once the program I want is launched?

I don't really understand. Open the window with the hotkey, choose the application to launch, and press enter. kupfer will hide its window and execute the chosen command.

What I mean is, can I set it up so that instead of hiding, kupfer terminates itself?

You may also be interested in dmenu.  Dmenu by itself may not be exactly what you are describing (or maybe it is ... depending on what the xfce tool does), but it is easily scriptable, and there is a large pool of scripts available to change it's behavior.

LOL. Had forgotten about dmenu as actually use it on uzbl. I'll need to do some tinkering to get it to do what I want but googling around I already found some scripts that can help me get started. Thanks Trilby.

Also, thanks everyone else for your suggestions.
