Re: I lost my sound

What does "aplay -l" list?

If you're using alsa, have you tried the command line tools for testing your audio hardware?  Check the alsa wiki here for more details.  Please post any errors you encounter.

Also, here is a link to the recent changes to ALSA.  Maybe this will help you determine what the issue is.

Re: I lost my sound

Thank natestar13. Good point.

aplay -l show me this:

card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

And I note that this card is not the audio showed by lspci.
this is an SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog and the lspci -k show a Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8445
That's right?
I must to change anything?

plus, i run some commands like alsaloop, and this is the output:

# alsaloop

Re: I lost my sound

It's okay that your aplay and lspci outputs are slightly different.  My laptop's outputs are below:

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC272X Analog [ALC272X Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[nate@arch-nate ~]$ lspci -k | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)

Have you tried any of the tips or troubleshooting tips from the ALSA wiki?  I would suggest looking at the Configuration section, specifically resetting the default sound card and making sure your modules are loaded.  In Troubleshooting, there is a section about issues with onboard intel sound cards.

Also, is your user still assigned to the audio group?

Re: I lost my sound

Ok, let me see.

first, I'm in the audio group.
second, I've installed some more alsa packages like alsa-oss. and everything remains as before
channels are all unmutting

I test thing like playing amarok and so on, all seem to be playing, but there is not sound in any way

some test:

speaker-test -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.26

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 13,282135
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 13,272719
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 13,260123
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 13,275878
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 13,271230
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
...

I dont set default card because aplay -l show me only one card

The load modules as show n the alsa wiki page:

snd_hda_codec_realtek 59152 1
snd_hda_intel 25700 3
snd_hda_codec 97432 2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 6300 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 74926 2 snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel
snd_page_alloc 7217 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel
snd_timer 18966 1 snd_pcm
snd 60021 12 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel

but i can't understand anything of this output.

the ls -l /dev/snd show me:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 sep 14 10:04 by-path
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 6 sep 14 10:04 controlC0
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 5 sep 14 10:04 hwC0D0
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 4 sep 14 14:19 pcmC0D0c
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 3 sep 14 15:24 pcmC0D0p
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 2 sep 14 10:04 pcmC0D2c
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 1 sep 14 10:04 seq
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 33 sep 14 10:04 timer

and the alsa page say that :
If you have at least the devices controlC0 and pcmC0D0p or similar, then your sound modules have been detected and loaded properly
so I think everything is correct

obviosly, volume level is high and the plug in male wire is in the right place.

Plus, in the kmix I see 4 tags:
playback devices : only internal stereo analog audio, at 90% not muted
capture device :  only internal stereo analog audio, at 90% not muted
playback streams: event sount at 90% not muted
and libvlc 2.0.3 audio stream at 90% not muted
capture streams: none

thank again

I run alsamixed and at exit show me this text:

Re: I lost my sound

I'm grasping at straws here, but just to make sure, what are you using as your backend sound server?  Are you using pulseaudio?  If so, do you have the pulseaudio-alsa package installed?

Also, do you have any conf files for alsa (such as asound.conf or .asoundrc)?

Re: I lost my sound

One important thing i just discover. I can hear the music, but with a very low volume level, I must to set the speakers level to max so I can hear the music.
Plus, the ~/.asoundrc and the /etc/asound.conf do not exist
Maybe the throuble is the KMIX, but I can see anything wrong there
