Weirdest discovery yet: Metacity kills OpenGL performance.
BZFlag under Gnome/Openbox: 30+ FPS
BZFlag under Gnome/Metacity: ~7 FPS
Why the heck should this happen?!

Yep, it looks like metacity is sucking the power right out of Gnome. I don't usually run any of the lightweight WMs with any Gnome/KDE libs, or files on my box, but maybe give it another try.
I'm not sure why, but I can never stick with Gnome for very long. I've tried it at least a dozen times over the last couple years and even went so far as to try dropline, but didn't care for it, either.
This constantly moving from one WM/DE to another is getting old, though.

Try Openbox3 - with the help of Menumaker 0.99.5, it integrates exceptionally well with Gnome.
As for Metacity vs. OpenGL, maybe that has something to do with Cairo, etc.? I can't see that sort of thing cutting GL performance by a factor of 3 or 4 though. :?
